Health protection in India underwent a historic transformation with the launch of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY in September 2018. Designed to insulate vulnerable families from catastrophic health expenditures, the scheme provides up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization.

In a historic policy milestone in 2024, the Union Cabinet expanded Ayushman Bharat to provide universal healthcare assurance to every senior citizen aged 70 and above across India, regardless of socio-economic status or income bracket.

Coupled with over 10,000 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras dispensing generic medicines at 50% to 90% discount, the programme has collectively saved Indian families over ₹1 lakh crore in medical expenses.
